IT Tech Support - can it really pay?

We're aware that there have been plenty of ICT surveys in the last couple of years but...

We've been asked to carry out some research for a voluntary sector organisation looking at the feasibility of an IT support services (technical support plus installations etc.) business. Results from this will be shared publicly, within practicalities of detail and confidentiality, and with any others researching the issue.

It would be great to hear from those of you providing tech support in the VCS (whether VCOs, individuals, social enterprises, private businesses or individuals) as we're trying to compile a definitive list of what works (and why) and what doesn't (and why) and what could be improved. Feedback can be either on or off record.
