Outcomes Health Checks

What is an Outcomes Health Check?

An outcomes health check is an assessment of an organisation's capacity to monitor and evaluate the outcomes of its work.

Why would we need one?

Many organisations are keen to implement an outcomes approach and may already have begun doing so, but this can often get overtaken by other priorities or suffer from a lack of direction. Some organisations have begun to monitor and evaluate outcomes relating to certain aspects of their work but would like to be able to join up this work across the whole organisation. Others simply lack the time to think about where to start in implementing an outcomes approach.

How would it help us?

An outcomes health check provides an organisation with a clear sense of how to develop its outcomes management. By bringing in external expertise, the organisation can benefit from individual support which helps it to identify both immediate steps and longer-term solutions in implementing an outcomes approach.

What does it involve?

An outcomes health check usually takes between 2 - 8 days to complete, depending on the size and complexity of the organisation. An external consultant visits the organisation and holds a series of individual meetings with the Director and service-delivery team leaders/heads of department. The consultant then produces a report which summarises the findings from these meetings and provides an action plan for the organisation in moving forwards with its outcome management.
